Drop boxes to report eve teasing were installed at Chennai Central,
the neighbouring Moore Market Complex and Egmore railway station
on Wednesday by the Government Railway Police (GRP).
Though the GRP received several complaints of eve teasing and had
initiated action against some persons, it was found that most of
the victims, however, did not prefer to lodge complaints. They were
either in a hurry to go to college or workplace or feared that if
their name was revealed it would lead to problems. In order to also
help them report, such incidents at the stations and in trains,
and to put an end to the menace, the drop boxes were being installed,
said P. Sivanandi, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Railways.
Speaking at a function in connection with the setting up of the
boxes, he said those making use of the facilities need not mention
their names in the complaints. The boxes would be cleared thrice
everyday. On receipt of the complaints, four teams of GRP constables
in civil dress would travel in suburban trains to apprehend the
offenders, he said.
The teams, each comprising five men and an equal number of women
constables, would travel in trains operated on the Chennai Central-Arakkonam;
Chennai Beach-Tambaram, Chennai Central-Gummidipoondi and Chennai
Beach-Velachery sections. For emergency, the GRP helpline - 99625
00500 - may be called.
