Renault-Nissan rolls out one millionth car from Chennai facility

Renault-Nissan’s in  near has reached a milestone by manufacturing its one millionth vehicle.

Nissan Micra, which is the largest exported car brand from the country, was rolled off the line today.

“I congratulate our workforce in Chennai for achieving a significant landmark in the ongoing evolution of this important plant,” Christian Mardrus, Chairman of Nissan’s Africa, Middle East and India region, and former Alliance executive vice-president, said in a release. “Our Chennaihas, and will continue, to play a fundamental role in the development of our business in India. Today’s milestone reflects the popularity of Nissan and Renault products in India and export markets, as well as the skill and dedication of our staff. It is also a measure of the high level of support we have enjoyed from the Tamil Nadu government,” he added.

The plant, which is the largest Alliance production facility in the world, started operations in March 2010 with an initial investment of Rs 4,500 crore and an additional Rs 1,600 crore to create a powertrain manufacturing facility and tooling.

The unit caters to both domestic and international markets and has developed into India’s second-largest car exporter with more than 6,00,000 units shipped to 106 countries since 2010. It has also introduced 32 new Renault, Nissan and Datsun models and derivatives to its production line.

Annual production volume at the plant has risen from 75,000 units in financial year 2010 to over 2,00,000 by the year ended December 2015.

Colin MacDonald, CEO & Managing Director of Automotive India Private Ltd, said that on an average they have launched two new models each year across three brands since 2010. The most recent model to be introduced at the plant was the Renault’s Kwid in September last year. This will be followed in 2016 by the third Datsun-branded vehicle to be sold in India.

Together, the manufacturing plant and R&D facility account for around 12,000 direct jobs in Tamil Nadu, with a further 40,000 in the Indian supplier chain, making an increasing contribution to the local economy.
